Wildlife Sanctuaries
Sunabeda Wildlife Sanctuary
Forest Division: Sunabeda (Wildlife) DivisionDistrict: Nuapada

Sunabeda Wildlife Sanctuary in Nuapada district is largely a grass-covered plateau adjoining Udanti and Sitanadi Sanctuaries of Chhatisgarh State. The sanctuary is an attraction to eco-tourists because of waterfalls, caves, archaeological sites at Giribaman, Jumlagarh Fort and Muraguda, and the bird observation points at Jalki and Raital Bandh in Maraguda. Sunabeda is home to 4 tigers and 20 leopards along with other species like Hyena, Barking Deer, Chital, Gaur, Sambar, Sloth Bear, Hill Myna, Pea Fowl, Partridge etc and a number of reptilian species also inhabit the sanctuary.
Kapilash Wildlife Sanctuary

Kapilash Wildlife Sanctuary in Dhenkanal district lies in Central Odisha which attracts tourists in droves because of its unique floral, faunal and geomorphological diversity.There is an abudance Sal, Saguan, Kendu, Kumbhi and mohua apart from other trees, Shrubs, herbs & climber. There are mammals like Elephant, Wild Boar, Deer, Monkeys, Jungle cats, Giant squirrels and birds like Peacock, Oride, Hill myna, parakeet, Owl, Grey Hornbills etc. The dense forests and the presence of wild animals draw many nature lovers to this area. A temple of Lord Shiva "Lord Chandrasekhar" is located at the top of the hill. To get to the temple one has to climb 1390 nos. steps. The way to the temple is thrilling with dense forests on both sides. There is a motorable road too. The singing birds, colorful butterflies and amazing waterfalls mesmerize the visitors.
Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary

Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in South – Western side of this Division notified under Section 18 of the Wildlife(Protection) Act, 1972 by the Govt. of Odisha, Forest, Fisheries & Animal Husbandry Department vide their Notification No. 243-FFAH dt.04.01.1984, published in the Odisha Gazette No.5 dt.03.02.1984 which comes under Deccan Peninsulain Chhotnagpur plateau of Garjat Hills. The Sanctuary includes Kuldiha, Devgiri and Tenda Reserved Forests and other Protected Forests. Kuldiha sanctuary area, adjoining Nilgiri forest in the North and Mayurbhanj Forest in West, is a typical representative of mixture of peninsular (coastal) Sal forest and moist mixed deciduous forest. It comes in the Biogeographic region of Deccan peninsular zone which is of enormous genetic and ecological importance with a variety of flora and fauna. The significance of the Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary can be categorized as follows: It abodes a number of endangered and threatened wild animal species like Asiatic Elephant, Leopard, Gaur, Mouse deer, Pangolin, Ratel, Giant squirrel etc. Besides that some endangered bird species like Hill myna, Woodpecker, Hornbill and Eagles are also found in the Sanctuary. It forms part of Mayurbhanj Elephant Reserve and linked to Similipal Biosphere Reserve through Hadgarh Wildlife Sanctuary, thus forming a vast landscape contributing to the cause of conservation of long ranging Asiatic Elephants and Tiger. It plays a significant role in ameliorating the local climate. It is the largest catchment which feeds to the major river and tributaries of the district along with maintaining the ground water regime of the locality. It is the major tourist destination in the District for nature lovers and one among the important tourist destinations of the State. Panchalingeswar, the sacred shrine of Lord Shiva, draws devotees from all corners of the State and outside.
Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary

Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary, an important site for in-situ conservation of wildlife and its habitat in the state of Odisha is home to an immense array of biodiversity, a large number of species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, odonates, butterflies and spiders are found here. The sanctuary is famous for its sylvan beauty and pristine wilderness. The dry deciduous forests with varied flora and fauna attract the nature-lovers of Odisha and neighboring states every year. The combination of dry deciduous mixed forests with rich wildlife, Hirakud reservoir and attractive topographical features are the important features of Debrigarh wildlife sanctuary. It is said to be one of the vibrant wildlife sanctuary of the state.
Chandaka-Damapara Wildlife Sanctuary

Chandaka Sanctuary is a wildlife reserve located in north western fringe of Bhubaneswar in the Indian state of Odisha. Chandaka – Dampara Wildlife Sanctuary comprises major forest area, i.e. notified forest blocks of Chandaka Wildlife Division. This Protected Area is notified in the Orissa Gazette vide Notification No.21 dated 7th January 1994.
Badrama Wildlife Sanctuary

“Badrama Wildlife Sanctuary”, which is also known as “Ushakothi Sanctuary” is situated at a distance of 37 Km. from the district headquarters of Sambalpur District towards Deogarh on National Highway- 6. The sanctuary comprises of parts of Badrama Reserve Forests, Ushakothi Reserve Forests, Binjipali Reserve Forests and Additional Kansar Reserve Forests. The Sanctuary is characterized by the presence of Moist Sal Forests, Sal dominated mixed deciduous Forests and bamboo forests. The Sanctuary forms a significant part of Sambalpur Elephant Reserve.
Balukhand-Konark Wildlife Sanctuary

This sanctuary is situated at convenient location along sea coast between Puri and Konark. This Wildlife Sanctuary extends from Banki Muhan near Puri to Keluni Muhan near Daluakani. The sanctuary is filled with lush green vegetation, cashew and casuarina plantations and mangrove forest. Its undisturbed sandy beaches offer high potentialities for developing as a major eco-tourism spot in Odisha. The sanctuary is covered by plantation of casuarina and cashew trees. It is home to herds of herbivores (spotted deer), monkeys, jungle cat, hyena, monitor lizards, snakes etc. Olive Ridley sea turtles are seen nesting in the beach. Balukhand-Konark Wildlife Sanctuary is traversed by the rivulets such as Nuanai River, Kusabhadra River, Kadua River and Prachi River.
Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary

Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the estuarial region of Bramhani-Baitarani, in the north-eastern place of Kendrapara district of Odisha (Orissa), the sanctuary covers an area of 672 square kilometers of Mangrove Forests and Wetland. Three rivers flow out to sea at Bhitarkanika forming a tidal maze of muddy creeks and mangroves. Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary is home to numerous species of birds. It is also home to the endangered and mysterious King Cobras. The sanctuary has to its account is the inhibition of its ecosystem by the Giant Estuarine Crocodiles and numerous varieties of other animal species.
Zoo/Deer Park
Papadahandi Deer Park
Name & Location of Zoo & Deer Parks: Papadahandi Deer Park, Nabarangpur, Odisha.Papadahandi Mini Zoo in Nabarangpur district was initially established as a “Deer Park” in the year 1986. Papadahandi Deer Park was a tiny and timely effort conceived in three decade ago in 1986. The basic idea was to save the fast disappearing population of spotted deer and to educate public regarding wildlife conservation. In fact, it is the only deer park of its kind in this part of tribal dominated South Odisha. It is within the Papadahandi Reserve Forest, having dense Sal growth.
Kapilash Zoo
Name & Location of Zoo & Deer Parks: Kapilash Zoo, At/Po-Deogaon, PS-Gondia, Dist.-Dhenkanal, Odisha, Pin-759016The present Kapilash Zoo had come up as a Deer Park on 26th January, 1979. The Zoo has got recognition as a “Small” category Zoo on dated 01.04.1995 by the Central Zoo Authority (CZA). It has a total area of about 26.64 hectares. There are about 15 different species including Elephant, Sloth Bear, Crocodile, Python, etc.

Sambalpur Zoo
Name & Location of Zoo & Deer Parks: Sambalpur Zoo & Conservation Centre, Sambalpur, Motijharan, Sambalpur, Odisha-768001Sambalpur Zoo and Conservation Centre (SZCC), Sambalpur is one of the important Zoos in the State. Started as a Deer Park in the year 1980, over a period of time, this ex-situ conservation center has gradually transformed to a zoological park which houses more than 350 numbers of animals belonging to 18 species. Recently Blackbuck & Hog Deer have been housed in the Zoo. The Master Plan of Sambalpur Zoo for the year 2023-24 to 2042-43 has been approved by the CZA, New Delhi vide Computer No. 146991 dt. 14.12.2023. The zoo spreads over 13.58 ha of area, with good cover of natural forests, which makes the animals to be in a natural environment. Further this zoo is the only wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre in Western Odisha and most of the rescued animals from the forests of Western Odisha are being brought here for successful rehabilitation. The zoo has a lot of success stories regarding conservation breeding of Chousingha, Barking Deer, Sloth Bear etc.
